In order to conduct preliminary research, I spent two weeks studying the area, observing activities and analyzing the material conditions around the 30th and 29th block of Lisbon Avenue. I looked at the quality of light during the day and night, and measured natural illumination during different times throughout the year. I documented foliage and overgrowth, road conditions, and the layout of streets, side streets, and alleyways. I examined fences, garbage cans, lampposts, sidewalks, vacant lots, and other material conditions of this area. I produced a detailed taxonomy of surrounding buildings types. This detailed analysis helped me understand the social, cultural and physical fabric of this area.
