Veteran Landscapes
It came down to a choice for Kelly between being an architect and a fighter pilot. Architecture won, but barely: Kelly has just completed her master’s degree in architecture while also serving part-time in the Air National Guard as an intelligence officer. For her graduate thesis project, Kelly created a multi-pronged neighborhood revitalization plan to keep residents in their homes by developing live/work spaces that also bring new services into the community.

Project Esprit de Corps offers an alternative approach to neighborhood revitalization by developing a series of residential and community spaces addressing the needs, aspirations, and struggles faced by veterans and non-military residents of Milwaukee. While the proposed design framework is applicable to any city within the United States, this thesis focuses on the case study of the Center Peace Neighborhood in Sherman Park, Milwaukee.
This project operates at multiple geographic scales, ranging from the urban, neighborhood, block, street, and the building levels. Recognizing underutilized spatial and social systems as potential assets, the design proposes a support network of sites and services for veterans and residents living in this community. Vacant homes are transformed into live-work spaces and then placed in a coherent pattern across the neighborhood, creating livable housing, employment, and income.
Project Esprit de Corps stresses the idea that buildings are more than form. They are a system of interconnected systems and spaces, and architects have the power to transform society and create vibrant communities by creatively redesigning the built environment.
