Dimensional Reflection
(Amaranth Café)
3329 W Lisbon Ave. We chose the Amaranth Cafe because it is a place where people regularly gather and converse. It is one of the central places of the area, described by one of the residents as a "vortex" of the community. The space contains several choreographic and architecture features -- such as depth and a tri-dimensionality -- that inspired our more circular movement palette. This location also has very confined spaces, especially those close to the two windows in front of the building. These windows allow community members to look into the café as they pass by. This spatial intimacy required compact movement, while using negative spaces created by the dancer’s bodies in the space. We learned how to work with a compositional score that took into account the unusual architecture of the space and to use improvisation within a fixed choreographed scheme. Working in this space in the midst of the everyday life of the community showed us how dance can reach and influence many people, even those who have never seen dance before. |
