Skewed Cornerways
(Rosalind Cox’s [Rae House])
1647, N. 35th Street Our group became involved with Mama (Rosalind) Cox in our first "intervention" in which four of us danced in an open space between her home and a community garden. The space was like an open canvas with a busy neighborhood atmosphere of passing cars, a school, a bus stop and even a passing school bus. This atmosphere allowed us to reach out to as many people as possible who might be just passing by, waiting for the bus, or just watching entertainment. For our indoor site-specific performance we remained in the same neighborhood, but adapted our choreography and structured improvisation to the closed space of a closed off house that was awaiting renovation. We adapted our movement from the wide open exterior space to the more limited confines of the house. After our crew, including the dancers, cleared the space, it was outfitted with furniture and lights so that the living room became like a stage. We adapted our movement to the furniture, moving as you might normally sit on a couch or chair. We alternated sitting and dancing to allow more space to move and to give each individual dancer a break in the improvisation, to take a step back and reassess the choreography, breathe, and begin again when the moment was right.
